Queer games are incredibly important for visibility, and making them available to the widest audience possible is essential. So in honor of Pride Month, the team of _Queer Them All_ wanted to give the opportunity to an indie game dev or studio to have their game translated for free! π
In summer 2024, we worked hard to unite a huge team of awesome volunteer video game translators. More than 70 volunteers joined the event, with 21 languages in total at first. Meanwhile, we received dozens of messages from talented game developers, and we submitted the queerest games to vote.
Not all linguists (and languages) who joined this project stayed until the end. In such a large, volunteer project, this was bound to happen.
So we are especially glad that so many people stuck with us to bring this project to life in 17 languages in total:
Most of our volunteers chose to work on Rocket Adriftβs game Psychroma. This narrative-driven side-scroller has been localized into 16 languages for the event : Catalan, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (European), Russian, Spanish (European), Spanish (Latin American), Thai and Turkish.
You can find out more about it in this devlog.
The 17th language team voted to translate Forsythia Productionsβ Confluence, An Of Sense and Soul Soliloquy into Japanese, making great and diligent work of it. The translation is available here.
Since this is a volunteer-only, non-profit project, we wanted to make sure everyone involved had fun and would be able to feature this event on their portfolio. So, naturally, all translators, proofreaders, and testers are credited on Psychroma and Confluence, respectively. β€οΈ
You can also find the entire credit list here.
Our goals are to promote diversity in video games by making queer, indie games available in many languages, **and** to offer linguists a chance to be featured on a meaningful project. We hope that this event will help them grow their career and take part into paid projects, as gameloc is a passion but also and mostly a job.
For the record (and as we may or may not consider making _Queer them all!_ a recurring event), these were the criteria for selection:
To be selected, the game must either:
- be developed by a queer indie studio/team/individual
and/or
- have a story that features queer themes, queer stories, or queer characters
You must also agree to name all translators in the credits of the game. β€οΈ
Even though the games for the event have already been chosen (and translated!), weβd be so glad to hear about other LGBTQIA+ games and to share them on our platforms! Get out there, tell us about your game, we will listen.
**Weβre here, and our stories are meant to be told π³οΈβπ**
Below are some of the games we want to promote through this event — even though we cannot translate all of them, we sure support them all!
